Humboldt Park Field House Computer Lab

Dándole Tech is partnering up with Lolita Productions & Humboldt Park, a Chicago Park, to seek funding to create a state-of-the-art computer lab & workshop space for the community. These spaces will reside inside of the historic field house, located in the second-largest city park in Chicago. 

The lab will support Humboldt Park area students by providing access to a learning and technology resource lab for entrepreneurship, coding, app development, tech repair, and sound recording studio. The lab will support Humboldt Park area students by providing access to internet services, computers, educational software, and workshops. Additionally, we hope to provide internships, college counseling, and volunteer opportunities to further student personal development and immerse them in the local community and culture.

Our goal is to be able to host workshops that give students a hands-on technology experience and teach them how to repair devices, which is currently not taught in schools. We want to create a certification program that can be used to track progress and quantify our results. We desire to host classes for older adults to teach them the technology required for entrepreneurship opportunities. We plan to have guest speakers speak on various tech topics, such as coding, web design, in return, motivating students to gain an interest in technology.

A little bit about the Humboldt Park Community

Humboldt Park became a part of Chicago in 1869. It was originally envisioned to provide a beautiful scenic escape from the congested city life. Originally marshland, Humboldt Park became "the crown jewel" of the Park District and its community offers a mixture of different languages, foods, and traditions. On several streets, you will find beautiful murals that tell the history of the community. Many of the murals date back to the 1970s and are some of the oldest public art murals still in existence in the country.

Humboldt Park is a low-to-middle-income, mixed African-American and Hispanic neighborhood that has begun to show significant signs of gentrification especially on its eastern end, which is east of Humboldt Park itself. Located in the heart of the Humboldt Park Community, lies a large historic fieldhouse with a fitness center, two gymnasiums, meeting rooms, inland beach, historic lagoons, and boathouse. With the support of the local community, Puerto Rican leaders in Chicago began leasing the historic Humboldt Park stables near Paseo Boricua and now houses The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture. It is the only museum in the nation that is completely dedicated to the history of Puerto Rican arts and culture.

Covid-19 has posed an undue hardship to our children, in that their inability to access the technological resources, required for competitive learning, was inhibited due to remote learning.  

The bottom line is that we are an inner-city community trying to level the playing field so that students have an opportunity to prepare themselves for future tech jobs. Recent surveys show that the most in-demand jobs are in the technology industry. By providing workshops and creative outlets we are attempting to close the digital divide and give our K-12 students a fighting chance during these challenging times.
